Kobe, January 2010 - On this day the young guys learned a valuable lesson about details and communication. The opponent was Kobe's Rokko High School, a perennial power from Hyogo.
.
Strangely our team always started out slow and tentative as if feeling out opponents. There was a noticeable lack of urgency. This caused us to fall behind early.

Late 4th quarter:

Rokko...... 13
Johoku..... 0
Would the guys be able to pull this one out purely through effort and desire? A happy ending?
.In the 4th quarter and down by 13 points the kids began to rally. In a tale of two halves we had 100% conversion with fake punts, onside-kicks, and fourth down conversions. The offense got rolling and the backs were averaging seven yards a pop. It seemed as if our opponents had become spectators.
'
We had Rokko back on their heels putting two quick touchdowns on the board and seizing the momentum; alas, it would be details that would haunt us.

As tried and true gamblers we had multiple opportunities. We missed the first chance as a result of a false start during a two point conversion attempt. The next series we forced a fumble, scored another touchdown and misfired on a second two point attempt. Then we created a third and final opportunity by recovering an onside kick. The third and final pass attempt for the victory fell incomplete on the doorstep of the end zone.

Final, Johoku 12, Rokko 13.

The players were mad. They pointed fingers at one another; some suggested I called the wrong plays. Surely there was someone to blame.

After calming down a bit the guys realized the guy in the mirror was the only one to blame. Understandably they'd had a chip on their shoulder about being from an athletically challenged school and they'd worked so hard. To top it off they'd traveled seven hours by bus for this. Not to worry though; the experience would be highly motivational. It would set the stage for what would happen against the next opponent.
