Half - time |
Hyogo, November 2009 - This was the first time the young players had to go to battle without their offensive leaders, juniors Kato (QB) and Maruyama (RB).
.
We had thirteen players suit-up that day, of whom eleven were in their first year. The other team had older more experienced players but that wasn't the issue. It seemed my kids didn't realize they were in a fight and they were out there just going through the motions.
.
We'd traveled five and a half hours by charter bus (on our own nickle) to play this team. Since the young guys were beginners I'd wanted to ease them into the rough stuff but our opponents that day had other ideas.

- Late 4th Quarter: Johoku is down 0 - 6 when 210 pound junior LB (#50) Anada strips the running back of the football and dashes 65 yards for a TD. The 2 point conversion failed, score 6 - 6.
.
- Next series: Sophomore DE (#65) Iwata scoops a fumble and rambles fifty yards to the opponent's ten yard line with 25 seconds remaining.
.
- Final play: First year QB (#12) Kondo tosses a touchdown to first year WR (#9) Ooe in the corner of the end zone for the winning score.
...Final: Johoku 12 - Mikki 6
.
After the game the opposing coach was curious how many upperclassmen we played that day. Mr. Takeshita told him we had two (RB #26 and LB #50) eleventh graders and the rest were beginners. The coach turned around and walked away without saying a word.
.
Why was I wearing a uniform ? We had thirteen players that day and one first year quarterback so I had to be prepared or we forfeit. I did play one series at quarterback and safety.
